Alternative Radio

Alternative Radio is a weekly one-hour public affairs program offered free to all public radio stations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, South Africa, Australia, and on short-wave on Radio for Peace International. AR provides information, analyses and views that are frequently ignored or distorted in other media. Established in 1986, AR is dedicated to the founding principles of public broadcasting, which urge that programming serve as “a forum for controversy and debate,” be diverse and “provide a voice for groups that may otherwise be unheard.” The project is entirely independent, sustained solely by individuals who buy transcripts and tapes of programs. Its “headquarters” is situated to correspond with its position in the mainstream mass media: down an alley, behind a house, on top of a garage in Boulder, Colorado. From this rarefied location, AR’s programs manage to reach over 125 radio stations and millions of listeners. AR is part of the non-profit Institute for Social and Cultural Change.

Art of the Song is a one-hour independently produced radio show with music and interviews exploring inspiration and creativity through songwriting and other art forms. The program is heard on over 160 stations worldwide. Learn why songwriters and artists create, how they become inspired, and how you can tap into that creative source in every aspect of your life. Art of the Song is not just for songwriters and musicians, as it explores universal truths common to all creative expression. We talk with writers of folk and roots music as well as novelists and visual artists. It’s all alive. Bluegrass Review

Bluegrass Review includes Bluegrass classics as well as the current wave. Commentary links the songs together by reflecting on artists’ styles, song lyrics, or Bluegrass history, as appropraite to the selections. The Bluegrass Review is a music show that includes produced segments and in-depth interviews that adds insiders’ knowledge about Bluegrass Music. The Bluegrass Review provides rich contexts for Bluegrass because Bluegrass fans are passionate about key Bluegrass figures and knowing about the evolution of teh style. The Bluegrass Review creates several narrative threads throughout a given broadcast. The focus shifts several times during a program, so that there is plenty of variety. Presenting multiple thematic bursts accomodates the typical pattern of listening to radio, about 15 minutes at a time.

THE ANCIENT RESONANCES of drums, bells, and flutes, the exotic tones of gongs and gamelans, the digital sounds of the new Ambient frontier. As it moves into its third decade, Hearts of Space continues to chronicle the best of the contemplative sound experience, with spacemusic from near and far out. Hearts of Space grew out of producer Stephen Hill’s fascination with space-creating, contemplative music. Beginning in the early 1970s, Hill hosted a weekly late-night radio program in the San Francisco Bay area. What began purely as a labor of love eventually became the most popular contemporary music program on public radio in America.

Jim Hightower

Jim Hightower, national radio commentator, writer, public speaker, and author of If the Gods had Meant us to Vote They Would Have Given us Candidates, has spent three decades battling the Powers That Be on behalf of the Powers That Ought To Be - consumers, working families, environmentalists, small businesses, and just-plain-folks. Twice elected Texas Agriculture Commissioner, Hightower believes that the true political spectrum is not right to left but top to bottom, and he has become a leading national voice for the 80 percent of the public who no longer find themselves within shouting distance of the Washington and Wall Street powers at the top.

Joe Frank

Joe Frank, broadcaster and performance artist, began his radio career in 1977 at WBAI in New York City and a year later served in Washington DC as co-anchor of National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” Over the course of the next two decades he produced over 200 radio programs for KCRW and National Public Radio. Throughout Frank’s career, he has been honored with many major industry awards. Joe Frank is an American radio personality, known best for his engaging, often philosophical, monologues and radio dramas. Frank started his career at WBAI in New York, and also served as a co-anchor for the weekend edition of National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. In 1986, Frank moved to Santa Monica, California to work at KCRW, where he wrote, produced and performed in a weekly hour-long radio program, “Joe Frank: Work In Progress.” Frank’s radio programs are at times dark and frequently ironic, humorous and absurd. Adding to the atmosphere of Frank’s monologues are loops of music over vocal drones.

People’s Pharmacy

People’s Pharmacy The People’s Pharmacy® got its start in 1972 in a small village in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, where Terry was doing research in medical anthropology. Joe began writing a book to explain medications in an easy-to-understand, friendly style. His master’s degree in pharmacology from the University of Michigan and his teaching experience with medical students prepared him for this undertaking. Terry completed her doctoral degree from the University of Michigan and the Graedons moved to Durham, NC. Terry taught at the School of Nursing and the Department of Anthropology at Duke University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in medical anthropology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
Joe has taught at Duke University School of Nursing and the UCSF School of Pharmacy and is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Pharmacy, where he also serves on the Board of Visitors. Joe has served as a consultant to the Federal Trade Commission on nonprescription drug advertising and is a member of the Society for Neuroscience. He received the Medical Self-Care award for The People’s Pharmacy. Terry belongs to the American Anthropological Association and the Society of Medical Anthropology. The Graedons were awarded the Silver Award for public affairs from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. They also received the “Health Headliner of 1998″ Award from America Talks Health for “superior contribution to the advancement of medicine and public health education.” Joe and Terry were named Ambassadors of the City of Medicine in 1999 and were the 1999 Harriet Cook Carter Distinguished Lecturers for the Duke University School of Nursing.

Southwest Stages

Southwest Stages weekly one-hour specialty radio show that features music in a wide variety of styles, from Blues to Jazz, Funk to Folk, Americana to Country, Rock to Rhythm, Native to World music and more. The program follows a magazine format with guest interviewers and great live performances. Southwest Stages is produced in “the heart of the Southwest,” Albuquerque, New Mexico. We gather material for the program by packing up our remote recording studio, traveling around the Southwest (from California to Louisiana) to record musical events and venues throughout the Southwest. By featuring the live performances recorded at community events, we fulfill our goal of bringing the art of live music back to the radio dial. Southwest Stages informs a national audience about the unique culture, venues and musical events of the Southwest. This Way Out

This Way Out is the award-winning internationally distributed weekly GLBT radio program, currently airing on over 150 local commmunity radio stations around the world. The half-hour “magazine”-style program is produced in Los Angeles and distributed via the Public Radio Satellite System and Pacifica Radio’s KU satellite to stations in North America, and via satellite in Australia on the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia’s ComRadSat. “This Way Out” is also heard via direct satellite to home and cable outlets across Europe, South America, and in the Middle East/Africa and Asia/Pacific regions on the World Radio Network, and is heard globally on short wave station Radio For Peace International and online at Out in America.
