The Buena Vista Whitewater Project is hosting a their first American Boulder Series competition September 11th at the 3 public climbing boulders in the Buena Vista Garden and South Main Town Square. The first and only outdoor stop on the American Bouldering Series competition circuit. Competitive rock climbers will go to Buena Vista to earn points in an effort to qualify for national level competitions like the National Championships and World Cup. There are 5 divisions and registration starts at 9am. For preregistration inquires email markkrasnow@gmail.com. Plasmodium. It’s not a T.V., it is a killer. It’s the micro-organism that causes malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. This deadly problem has an easy solution—nets. Beginning September 11th and going through October 9th you’ll be able to contribute to Nothing But Nets while you enjoy a soccer game here in Salida, just find the red shirt volunteer and get a self-addressed return envelope to send in your donation and if you don’t attend soccer games don’t worry, you can help too, just stop by the Methodist Church on 4th and D streets, pick up your envelope or drop off your donation. Remember, it only costs $10 to help prevent this deadly disease and save a life. A child dies every 30 seconds in Sub-Saharan Africa. From what you might ask? Mosquitoes carrying deadly Malaria. Many get infected after being bitten during their sleep at night. In 2006, the people of the United Methodist Church joined forces with others, including the National Soccer League, to raise awareness in an effort, in a practical way, to fight Malaria in Africa. In part the answer was simple, just $10 to purchase mosquito netting, a bed may be covered and a life saved. During the six-week Salida Soccer season, members of the United Methodist Church of Salida will be attending soccer games to help in this worthy cause. They will be answering questions and handing out self-return envelopes to those attending the games from September 11th through October 9th. Look for volunteers from the Methodist Church in red shirts and they will be happy to answer any of your questions and provide the envelope. Donations are needed to assist Robert Parker with medical expenses associated with his recent diagnoses of prostate cancer. Robert Parker is a well known artist in the area and is co-founder of Artpost at Itty Bitty Lakes in Coaldale, Colorado, a regional center for fine art and high craft. An account to help defray medical expenses has been set up at Pueblo Bank & Trust under the Robert Parker Medical Fund and donation may be made at any of their branches. He and his family sincerely appreciates the many prayers, words of concern and support.

AVAC’s 26th Annual Open Awards Show

The Arkansas Valley Art Center, in Buena Vista, held it’s 26th Annual Open Awards Show on Saturday, August 28. Featuring a judge’s critique from 10am to 12noon.
